how to use sterilized grain in mushroom cultivation

Inoculating and spawning a Myco Junkies sterile red milo grain bag with a liquid culture syringe is a process that involves injecting the bag with a mycelium-filled solution. It's important to work in a clean environment to prevent contamination. Below are detailed instructions:

Materials Needed:

- 3lb Myco Junkies sterile red milo grain bag with injection port
- Liquid culture syringe (containing the mushroom mycelium of your choice)
- 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (for sterilization)
- A lighter or alcohol lamp (for sterilization)
- Sterile gloves
- Face mask
- Clean workspace

Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Workspace: Before starting, clean your workspace thoroughly. This includes any surfaces you'll be working on and any tools you might touch during the process. You can use a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, or a commercial antibacterial cleaner. Remember, mushrooms are a type of fungus, and they're very susceptible to other bacteria and fungi that might want to take over their growing medium.

2. Personal Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly and wear a face mask. Put on your sterile gloves. Make sure to minimize any air flow in the room (close windows, turn off fans, etc.) to reduce the risk of airborne contaminants.

3. Sterilize the Injection Port: Wipe the self-healing injection port on the grain bag with a cloth or paper towel soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol to sterilize it.

4. Sterilize the Syringe Needle: Flame the needle of the liquid culture syringe until it glows red hot, using a lighter or alcohol lamp. After flaming, let it cool for a few seconds but do not touch it to any non-sterile surface.

5. Inoculate the Grain Bag: Shake the liquid culture syringe to evenly distribute the mycelium. Remove the needle cap, and carefully insert the needle into the sterilized injection port. Inject 1-3 cc of the liquid culture into the bag. Be careful not to touch the needle to anything other than the injection port.

6. Seal and Mix the Bag: After injection, carefully remove the syringe. Gently shake the grain bag to distribute the liquid culture throughout the grains. This will help speed up the colonization process.

7. Incubation: Place the inoculated grain bag in a warm (75-80°F or 24-27°C), dark location. Avoid direct sunlight, which can overheat and dry out the grains.

8. Wait and Monitor: Over the next 2-4 weeks, the mycelium will start to grow and colonize the grains. Look for a white, fluffy material spreading throughout the bag. This is the mycelium. If you see any other colors (green, black, or orange), this could be a sign of contamination.

9. Spawning: Once the bag is fully colonized by the mycelium, it is ready to be spawned to a bulk substrate for fruiting. The process for this can vary depending on the species of mushroom and the substrate you're using.

Remember, patience and cleanliness are key in this process. Good luck with your mushroom cultivation!
